My darling Hop-a-Long is home

Fresh from the hospital, pretty doped up!
Fresh from the hospital, pretty doped up!

Wow was Woof happy to see me last night! I tried to be a brave pack mom, but I’ll admit to siting with her in the cage and crying pretty hard. However, when she got up, I saw that the doc gave her THE nicest surgery looks-wise, she can sit, she can stand, and man can she HOP. Wow! I’d brought my homemade sling to help her? Yeah, if I can catch her to put it around her belly!

She’s got a pain patch and antibiotics, and luckily mom has tramadol on hand. I was told to wait, but after that kind of surgery, if she whimpers I’m going to want to give her one.

Her BFF Zoe wanted in on the indoor fun, and she’s keeping her space. A few sniffs like ‘hey dude where’s your leg?’ and then all is peaceful. Appetite is great, pills down the muzzle are ruff, but overall I’m seeing that my trail dog isn’t lost, she’ll rehab and work her way gradually back up to being my hop along side kick.

Also, the irony isn’t lost on me that Easter is around the corner – I guess I can look at this as I’ve now got a 1/2 dog 1/2 bunny. She DOES have long ears.

Thanks for the responses, it’s comforting to read what so many others have gone through as well, and to be told I did the right thing. Having the leg fused from hip to hock did NOT sound like the right thing to do.

From Quadropod to Tripawd, About to be Picked Up from Hospital

Woof’s mom here. Long story short, my precious pound pup Woof of 2 + years was hit by a slow moving yet large car on Monday, the damage was at the hock (shaved off 50%) and hip (dislocated and wouldn’t stay after her first procedure). The vets and ortho’s all agreed that amputation was the best bet, so I made the horrible scary decision to go TriPawd.

I’m 30 m from picking her up at the hospital. I went to see her yesterday before surgery, which is where the first avatar is coming from, she was so stoic and happy but the leg was swolen to gigantic proportions, with missing veins for the circulation to come out of the paw.

Everything I’ve heard and read says I’ve done the right thing. It doesnt’ FEEL like the right thing. And I’m scared – I read “3 legs and a spare” and I know I need to be a strong pack leader, but I’m afraid I’ll fall apart when I pick her up. Cross your fingers for me, and pray for her.

Thanks y’all.
